The Office: Season One Episode Two “Diversity Day”—Lesson: Education Alone is not the Answer

In the first episode of Brian Baumgartner’s excellent podcast series on “The Office,” you hear from creator Ricky Gervais. He says that one of the inspirations for the program was a boss whose actions complied to corporate pressure but whose heart was not won over. I agree. Believe me, I have spent a lifetime trying to teach, educate, and help people understand what to do and not to do. People can know the right thing to do and not do it. They can know the wrong thing to do and still do it. Knowledge alone is not the answer. Hearts must also be won.

Edwin Friedman wrote that first and foremost of the displacement issues into which American citizens pour their anxieties are those having to do with safety. Hmm. Can you think of any lately?

Words from almost 25 years ago that apply today: people “inject” their anxieties into national issues. These issues “serve as a distraction from having to deal with personal responsibility elsewhere.”
