Have you ever seen someone freeze up? Sometimes, a child acting in a school play will become paralyzed in front of an audience. Adults can freeze up in real life, too, often getting stuck in an unproductive routine at work.
When I was in high school, Robert Conklin wrote one of the best stories of how to work with people. He recounted a conversation between a mother and her 14-year-old son about his first girlfriend. “What does she like about you?” the mother asked.
“That’s easy,” he replied. “She thinks I’m handsome, fun, smart, talented, and a good dancer.”
“What do you like about her?”
“That she thinks I’m handsome, fun, smart, talented, and a good dancer.”
Conklin went on to explain, “That’s the way a flower blossoms – toward the sunshine! The sunshine of your life is the person who makes you feel important, feel good about yourself. You are attracted to those people whose presence, you can say, ‘I like myself better when I’m with you!’”
A common problem that many people have is that they dislike themselves. So, if they come in contact with people who help them see some positive quality in themselves, it can prove to be a game-changer. This is good in and of itself. Yet, it can be even more profound. By helping people to make peace with who they are and value their positive qualities, we can help them find ways to reach their potential. This can make a significant impact at work, school, church, family, and community.
Here’s a call to action. Let’s all work hard to help people learn to appreciate something valuable about themselves. It can make them feel good, enjoy healthy self-esteem, and could even lead the way for them to achieve what God has made them to do.
