Ever been nervous? Désirée was fourteen and had enrolled in the John Murray Anderson School for the Dramatic Arts.
Like many teenagers, Désirée wrestled with insecurities. But her story contained even greater challenges, like her father passing away when she was just four years old. Luckily, she had someone cheering her on—her grandfather. He had been a performer himself and encouraged her to try the stage. With her mom’s blessing, Désirée was finally set to chase her acting dreams at one of the best schools.
Then reality set in. Brutally, experts and professionals told her that she “had no future at all as a performer.” Sadly, her dream of studying at the dramatic arts school did not come true. Our blessing is that Désirée ultimately did not listen to those who were supposedly able to see into her future. She kept chasing her dream, starting with modeling. Today, who does not enjoy watching Lucille Désirée Ball perform in movies and her classic TV show, I Love Lucy?
A lot of people grow so depressed living in this world that they cannot bear to look to the future. Yet sometimes, the future is better than one can ever imagine.
Experts get it wrong. Research can point us in the wrong direction. Remember the American Revolution? Every prediction said the colonists didn’t stand a chance. The experts called it a sure loss. Guess what? They were wrong.
Recognizing limits can be good; just don’t do it too soon.
And here’s a fun fact: Lucy and her husband, Desi Arnaz, weren’t just stars—they were game changers. They pioneered three-camera filming with live audiences and saved shows on videotape, which basically invented TV syndication. That’s why we can still binge-watch I Love Lucy and so many other classics.
Had Lucille Ball listened to the “experts”, the world would have lost the talents of one who brought it great joy. Yes, we should hear the experts out and check the research, but don’t let the experts or the data write your life story. You will be judged on the way you live out your life story; you might as well be the one who decides how it shall be written.
